How Much Topsoil Do You Need?
Recommended installation is 18 inches deep for gardens and 12 inches deep for lawns.
That said, how much you use may depend on your local environment and how much of your property you want to cover. Here’s a quick guideline for how many of our bags you need to purchase.
1 cubic yard of topsoil covers:
- 3 inches deep, 108 square feet
- 4 inches deep, 81 square feet
- 6 inches deep, 54 square feet
- 8 inches deep, 40 square feet
- 9 inches deep, 36 square feet
- 12 inches deep, 27 square feet
Let’s say you had 500 square feet of lawn and flower bed you wanted to cover in front of a Vancouver townhouse, up to 6 inches deep. 10 of our 1-cubic-yard bags will cover your needs. A single family home with a lot more yard could need more than double the topsoil – but a community garden with small individual plots might just need a bag or two for each gardener.
Then again, maybe you only need 4 inches of depth – or 10! A lot will depend on local soil conditions and climate – and the type of sod you’re growing on your lawn.
