Victoria’s climate is relatively mild, but with long dry summers and shallow soils in many areas, proper turf selection and care is key.
💧 Drought Awareness
Summer watering restrictions are common across the CRD. Our drought-tolerant turf blends—like Fescue—are well-suited to Victoria’s climate and can help reduce water use while maintaining a green lawn.
🌤 Light Conditions
From sunny backyards in Langford to shaded, tree-lined streets in Oak Bay, turf selection matters. Fescue works well in shady or mixed-light areas, while Supreme and Ryegrass blends are ideal for sun-drenched spaces.
🍃 Local Soil & Drainage
Victoria soils are often rocky or shallow, especially in upland areas. Before laying sod, we recommend prepping with a good layer of topsoil to ensure strong root establishment and healthy long-term growth.
🚫 Moss & Moisture
Due to coastal humidity and shade, moss can be a problem in certain areas—especially over winter. Proper lawn care, aeration, and regular mowing will help your turf stay moss-free and thriving.

Yes—Western Turf Farms delivers fresh-cut sod throughout the CRD, including Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, View Royal, Langford, Colwood, Sidney and more. See the Victoria service-area page for the current neighbourhood list.
Vancouver Island (including Victoria) is on a regular weekly delivery run, and sod is harvested fresh the day it ships. Order in advance so you can install the same day.
For low-water needs and summer restrictions, consider drought-tolerant or fescue-forward blends; for premium look + self-repair, bluegrass/rye mixes (e.g., Select/Supreme) work well. See “Choosing the Right Turf” for use-cases (shade, traffic, chafer risk, etc.).
CRD Stage-1 restrictions run May 1–Sept 30. Newly installed sod can be watered during installation and for the first 21 days after installation (within prescribed hours); seeded areas have up to 49 days to establish. Always check the CRD page before you water.
Water immediately after installation, then keep the root zone consistently moist for 2–3 weeks; taper to deeper, less-frequent watering in weeks 3–4. Use early-morning windows to reduce evaporation—while staying within CRD hours. See our lawn-care timeline for week-by-week guidance.
Aim for 4–6 inches of quality topsoil for healthy root establishment and drainage; our Turf Blend Soil (50% sand / 50% organic topsoil) is designed for turf prep and topdressing.
Use the Sod & Soil Calculator to measure and add 5–10% for cuts. Standard small rolls cover 1 sq yd (9 sq ft) each, which makes estimating simple.
You can install sod most of the year when the ground isn’t frozen, but spring and early fall offer cooler temps and occasional rain that help new sod root faster.
Chafer beetle pressure exists in parts of coastal BC. Tall fescue develops deeper roots and is noted for better chafer tolerance; proper watering and fertility also help.
Both. We deliver fresh sod and can also handle full install (removal, soil prep, laying sod). For large projects (parks, sports fields, golf), big-roll installation is available on Vancouver Island.
Keep traffic light for the first 2 weeks. Do a gentle “tug test”; once the sod resists lifting, you can mow (sharp blades, higher setting). Our care guide shows a week-by-week schedule.
