Sod & Soil Calculator

Handy Online Sod & Soil Calculator Tools

At Western Turf Farms, we make it easy to estimate the amount of sod or soil you need for your project, whether you’re laying a new lawn or improving your garden. Use our simple calculators below to get a quick estimate and ensure you have the right amount of materials.

Sod Calculator

Estimate the Amount of Sod Required

To calculate how much sod you need, measure the width and length of the area to be covered in feet, then multiply these numbers to determine the square footage. Divide this by 9 to calculate the number of standard 1-yard sod rolls required. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and add the totals.

Quick Tip: Add 5-10% to your estimate to allow for cutting and trimming.

How to Manually Calculate the Amount of Sod Required
sod repair

Area of a Rectangle
Example: Length is 25 ft and Width is 25ft
A = length x width
A = 25 x 25
625 square feet
625 square ft ÷ 9 = 69.4 square yards

Area of a Circle
Example: circle radius r = 20
A = 3.14 x r2
A = 3.14 x 202
A = 3.14 x 400
A = 1256 square feet

sod repair

Area of a Triangle
Example: length = 15 ft, width = 20ft
A = Length x Width divide by 2
A = 15 x 20 ÷ 2
A = 150 square feet
150 square feet ÷ 9 = 16.6 square yards

Soil Calculator

How to Calculate the Amount of Soil Required

When preparing your lawn for new sod or enhancing your garden, it’s important to add a few inches of quality topsoil. Use our soil calculator to determine the volume of soil you’ll need by entering the width, length, and desired soil depth in inches.

Example:
For an area that’s 20 feet by 30 feet with a depth of 4 inches:
(20 ft x 30 ft x 4 in) ÷ 12 = 200 cubic feet
200 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 7.4 cubic yards

We Offer:

Topsoil, garden soil, mushroom compost, and mulch in 1 cubic yard bags. We deliver across the Lower Mainland and beyond.

The Cost of Sod Installation

When planning for sod installation, it’s important to consider both the cost of the sod itself and the installation. At Western Turf Farms, we offer premium sod at competitive prices, with options like Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, and Perennial Ryegrass—each varying slightly in cost depending on your specific needs and climate.

Sod Pricing Factors

Sod Type: Different grass types, such as drought-resistant or high-traffic sods, may affect the price.

Area Size: The larger the area, the more sod you’ll need, so ensure accurate measurements using our sod calculator.

Installation Costs

DIY vs. Professional: While you can save by installing sod yourself, professional installation ensures proper preparation and results. This includes soil preparation, installation, and ensuring the sod takes root successfully.

Additional Costs: If your soil requires improvement or drainage work, these will add to the overall cost. Clearing and removing old sod, if necessary, can also increase expenses.
