Western Turf Farms delivers fresh-cut sod and bulk topsoil to every Surrey neighbourhood, direct from our Langley farm on 240 Street. Most Surrey orders arrive within 1–2 business days, and professional installation is available. Order online or call 604-850-6660 for a quote.
Much of the sod laid in Surrey passes through a garden centre or landscape yard before it reaches your property. Ours comes straight from the field. Western Turf Farms has been family-owned and operated for more than 50 years, growing turf on roughly 500 acres across our Langley and Abbotsford farms. Surrey orders are cut and trucked a short drive to your driveway, so the sod arrives with its roots still fresh.
That short trip matters in Surrey, where many lawns go in during the warm, dry stretch between May and September. Sod that spends less time stacked on a pallet roots in faster and handles the first few weeks of watering limits better.
There are three ways to get our turf onto your Surrey property.
Delivery only (DIY): We drop palletized sod and bulk topsoil at your property. A small delivery fee applies within Surrey based on order size and amount. It works well for homeowners and landscapers who are laying the sod themselves.
Delivery and installation: Our crew preps, lays and rolls your new lawn, then leaves you with appropriate local and seasonal watering instructions for the first three weeks.
Farm pickup: Have a truck or trailer? Pick up your order at our Langley farm at 7880 240 Street. Appointment required.
On delivery day, pallets are placed near the installation site, so plan to lay the sod the same day it arrives. If you’re doing the soil prep yourself, order your topsoil for delivery a few days ahead so the base is levelled and ready when the sod shows up. Our sod and soil calculator can help you estimate quantities before you call.

Preparing Surrey soil for new sod: Most Surrey lawns do best with 4–6 inches of quality topsoil under new sod, especially on clay-heavy upland lots and new-build properties with compacted fill. Loosen the existing subsoil before spreading, level and lightly firm the new topsoil, and water it the day before your sod arrives. Our team can recommend the right soil blend for your project and deliver it ahead of your install date.
Surrey covers a lot of ground, from upland ridges to river floodplain to ocean-facing slopes, and soil and light conditions vary noticeably between neighbourhoods. Here’s how we typically guide Surrey customers.
Upland neighbourhoods (Fleetwood, Newton, Panorama Ridge, Sullivan Heights, Guildford): Many of these lots sit on dense clay that drains slowly and compacts easily. Older streets often have mature trees, too. We usually recommend amending the soil before installation, then choosing Supreme or Kentucky Bluegrass for sunny yards and Fescue under tree cover.
Lowland areas (Cloverdale flats, Hazelmere, and properties near the Serpentine and Nicomekl rivers): A high water table means winter pooling is the main challenge here. Grading and a well-draining topsoil base matter more than turf choice. Fast-rooting blends like Supreme or Ryegrass establish quickly once drainage is sorted.
New developments (Clayton Heights, Grandview Heights, Morgan Heights): New-build lots often have compacted builder fill with little real topsoil. Grass laid straight onto fill tends to struggle within a season or two. Adding a proper layer of topsoil first is the single biggest factor in how these lawns perform.
South Surrey and the coast (Ocean Park, Crescent Beach, Morgan Creek): These are open, sunny exposures, and many are sloped lots. Sod is the better choice over seed on slopes because it won’t wash out in heavy fall rain. For low-water lawns in full sun, Fescue’s drought tolerance is a real advantage under summer watering limits.

New sod needs frequent watering for its first two to three weeks, and in Surrey that has to fit within city watering rules. Surrey now sets its own restriction stages under an updated Drinking Water Conservation Plan bylaw, so the rules here can differ from the rest of Metro Vancouver.
Get a new-lawn permit. The City of Surrey offers a Special Sprinkling Permit for new lawns, which allows extra watering while restrictions are in effect. You apply by emailing the city a copy of your sod purchase receipt, so keep your Western Turf Farms invoice handy. Apply as soon as your installation is booked, and check surrey.ca for the current restriction stage before you lay your lawn.
Consider timing your install. Lawn watering restrictions typically run from May 1 to October 15. Early spring and fall installations let Surrey’s natural rainfall do much of the work and avoid peak-summer watering limits altogether. Fall is one of the best times to lay sod here: the soil is still warm enough for rooting, and the rain returns.
Treating chafer beetles? Surrey also issues sprinkling permits for nematode treatments, the biological control commonly used against European chafer beetle larvae in Lower Mainland lawns.
